Life as Art

Sometimes great creative photography comes from life itself. This amazing gallery of photos from the World Press Photos of the year is a great example.

World events, disasters, war, sports and other subjects are represented here in color and black and white. Each photo seems to answer the question “what makes a photograph powerful?”.

Out of all the differnet photos you could have chosen for this post, why’d you pick that photo? There’s nothing powerful about it. It’s self-indulgent, at best, and ugly at worst.

There were many great photos to choose from, and I agree comparatively, this photo does seem irrelevant (vs. others like disasters and famine) - but I was actually trying to find a photo that was not too stirring for this post. I think the portrait is very creative - and remember this is not a Hollywood actor ready for the next XXX film with Vin Diesel, but a real person in real life.
